We are at a new frontier, and no one knows quite how it goes. The era of the “Internet of Things” never really happened, becoming a frustrating disappointment, and now we head towards a new era of pervasive ambient intelligence, but with many of the core problems unsolved.
Connectivity can be from a few kB per day or GB per second at massively varying latency and reliability. Where it is best to deploy RAM and compute is not what is easiest for the software, but what makes most logistical sense within the constraints of the application.
But what really keeps stopping the good stuff from happening is that all the major participants want to own the whole ecosystem.
There has to be some better way, and I’m hoping to find it.
